Just had an opportunity to watch your presentation. I think your feeling is right that we are starting to see movement in thinking about how these tools can be used. Baby steps ! is how it all happens
I was thrilled today to learn my nursing unit is considering the use of texting as a way of quickly communicating with staff about shifts that need to be filled rather then the charge nurse making 30 phones calls to find staff. It makes sense, saves time and uses a tool wisely in practice.

I have a real desire to see patient education at the bedside move forward with the use of technology.. using the tools such a video streaming to an ipad for example at the bedside of pictures and content (teaching wound care on discharge is just one example). I know our physicians draw diagrams for patients on whiteboards to explain to parent certain surgical procedures but image how much more effective the explainations can be with pictures on an ipad. Nurses spend hours educating patients and families and we teach that patient education involves knowing how our learners learn. As a patient at the bedside I would welcome watching and video on an Ipad to explain my upcoming surgery (and as you not most patients search the internet for information).

You tube has some incredible videos that I have used with my students in health assessment to facilitate learning... and I am always amazed at what is out there and how much more interesting it in then the text book!!

While I appreciate the impact that this video is trying to make, I find its message (It just makes sense!) simplistic. We need a far more sophisticated approach to hand hygiene, one that takes account of the role of identity into current practice. Did anyone notice that the health practitioner is male?

So true! Negativity is a soul-crusher, it saps moral, energy, creativity, end hope. It also serves as a self-deluding rationalization that all is hopeless, so its OK not to try to make things better. Change is hard, and change takes some courage, but things can most certainly get better for Nursing. Besides, I love what I do: it took a few job changes along the way, but Nursing is a really big, quite diverse tent. It does Nurses and their patients no favors to stick with an disliked position: we should move on if we can, or step up and improve things if we can't go or simply don't want to go.

Great post Rob. Loved the video you included. I accompanied a friend to pick up his new CPAP and was impressed with the technology they are starting to integrate. As mentioned by Walter in the video, I think that much of this technology is still geared heavily for the health professional to use and interpret. More focus needs to be put on helping motivate and educate the client.
